It cannot be denied that one of the best things about online workers is the pay. Online workers do get paid a lot on top of the freedom to own their time and bring work wherever they want. Sure, you have your skills but you can’t always trust everyone who wants to do “business” with you on the Internet. Even when you’re miles away, you still have to guard yourself with contracts. You don’t need a long and fancy one, but you do have to know the most important things to put in so you can be fully protected.
You can begin by making your sentences simple, brief and direct to the point. Do away with those confusing technical terms, especially if you don’t understand them completely yourself. Just come up with a decent outline of your obligations as a contractor and your client’s. State in detail what your client can expect from you as you work on the project and the terms of payment that you have agreed upon. Also don’t forget to include a clause that describes what is to be the effect when payment is not given on time or when there is a breach of contract by either party.
Equally important are the names that go into the contract. Make sure that everybody who is involved in the project is clearly identified with their exact and correct names, their roles and their business addresses. Always play safe and assume that this contract will be used for against you or that you could use it against your client if and when the need to protect your interests in this transaction arises. When you have the wrong basic information such as names and addresses on it, you can’t expect that contract to hold water.
Most importantly, for online workers, it is important that the laws that govern your contract are clearly indicated. This is particularly important because an online working relationship may bring about confusion regarding jurisdiction issues. For this reason, it is highly recommended that you seek the advice of a lawyer whom you can consult regarding this. Always remember that it’s not enough that you have a written contract. You also have to make it work where and how it needs to work.
